While owning a riding a horse is a wonderful experience in itself, most riders eventually feel the urge to take their horse out into the world of horse showing. Showing is a wonderful way to challenge yourself and your horse and to get a chance to compare yourself to others in the same discipline.

There are shows available for riders of all ages and levels of experience. Many farms that teach lessons hold a regular series of schooling shows that often are open to the public. You will also find that many fairs hold low-level horse shows and some areas even have special clubs that host a series of shows through the season.

The first step is finding what shows are available for your discipline. Not all shows have classes for all kinds of horses or riders. If you know of a local barn that specializes in your discipline you can try giving them a call to see if there are any shows in your area that might suit your goals. Another place to look is at local horsey websites where many show organizers will post their shows. If your horses are a part of a specific breed organization try contacting that group and see if they have any events out your way.

Once you have found a show take a look at their class list. It is important to understand what is required in each of the divisions before deciding which ones to enter. The classes are not always what you might expect at a glance. For example, a pleasure class might look like it should be performed out on the trail, but in fact it is in a closed ring with a group of horses who are judged for how quiet and comfortable they are to ride. If you are unsure what any of the classes are contact the show organizer and they will be glad to help you.

Before the show, spend some time practicing the things you plan to do at the show. Make sure that your horse listens well and is used to working with other horses in the ring. If you can, take your horse to a neighbouring farm or two to get him used to working at a place other than your home farm. Not all horses trailer well, so if your horse has not been shipped recently you might want to practice loading him a few times so that you are not stuck with a horse who will not get on the trailer the morning of the show.

The day before the show spend a lot of time cleaning your horse. It is a sign of respect to the judge to present a well-groomed horse. If your discipline requires braiding you should make an effort to braid your horse. Even at the lower levels it is better to show a horse braided if it suits your discipline and the practice is great, especially if you plan to try showing at the higher levels in the long run.

Your tack should also be thoroughly cleaned and polished. Don’t use any products that would make your saddle slippery, you would not want to have a spill thanks to slippery tack. Set aside some clean brushes and bandages to use on the show day.

Before going to bed make sure that you have everything packed up and ready to go. Show mornings are stressful enough without having to race around trying to find things to take with you.

On the morning of the show be sure to plan to arrive at least an hour before your classes are to begin. This will give you time to sign in, get your horse tacked up and warm up. If you are not sure what time you should be there contact the show for an estimate and arrive half an hour earlier than they suggest. It is better to be too early than too late.

When you arrive go to the show office before unloading your horse. They will sign you in, give you your number and let you know where things are at. Once you are signed in return to your trailer and unload your horse. If you have time take your horse for a little walk around the show grounds so they know what to expect.

About half an hour before your classes tack up and start to warm up your horse. Most shows will have a ring set aside for warming up your horse. Keep your ears open for the announcer so you know when your class begins.

In your class relax and just do your best. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, what matters is that you try your best and have fun.

When the day is finally over give your horse a thorough grooming and let him go and relax. If your horse can be turned out for a while it is a great way to get him to settle down and de-stress. Have your barn manager give him a hot bran mash or some extra treats for dinner if your horse enjoys that sort of thing. Most horses like to have a day off after showing, so don’t make any plans to ride your horse the next day.

Once your horse is back home and settled in you can get a chance to relax too. Take it easy and have fun going over the events of the day. Learn from your mistakes and plan ahead to make sure that things will go even better next time.

I am amazed at how perfect music can improve and enhance a horse’s movement and the rider’s rhythm! When music fits the horse and rider, both the quality of the gaits and movements improve. The music enhances both the artistic aspect and the technical side of the ride. Because rhythm is maintained!
After years of studying the effects of music I learned a few things.

Studies show that music affects our physiology. Slow music slows the heartbeat and the breathing rate as well as brings down blood pressure. Faster music speeds up these same functions.

Listening to your favorite music is good for your cardiovascular system. Researchers have shown that joyful music has a healthy effect on blood vessel function.

Riding to music increases your endurance and feelings of well-being. Studies show that exercising to music improves endurance by 15% and improve the “feeling states” so, people derive much greater pleasure from exercise. (Those cool endorphins!!)

Many hospitals use music to treat patients with stress-related illnesses to stimulate the brain and relax the body.

Music affects both sides of your brain, so whether you are a left-brain logical thinker or a right-brain artistic thinker, music helps you ride better.

Even animals react differently to various types of music. Given a choice, rats will choose calm classical music over hard rock every time.

Music can also influence brainwaves. Faster beats make you more alert and slower beats help you relax.

Music creates a long-lasting change in brainwave activity. That means that music can bring lasting benefits to your state of mind, even after you’ve stopped listening.

Music filters out background noises so that you and your horse can concentrate better.

Music acts as an INTERNAL metronome to help you maintain a regular rhythm.

Music puts you in a more positive state of mind, helping to keep depression and anxiety at bay.

The bottom line is… it’s fun to ride to music!

An average horse may cost only $3000 to buy, but over its working live can easily cost $100,000 to take care of. I’m often amazed at people who feel that cannot spend a couple of thousand dollars more for the horse they really want, considering that the purchase price is perhaps 5% or less of the cost of owning a horse.

The typical costs of owning a horse are:

- Professional Stabling. Depending on where you live, a professional stable will charge between $250 and $1000 per month to stable a horse. This is $3000 to $12000 per year. Over 20 years, a grand total sixty thousand to a quarter million.

- Self-Stabling. Of course, if you have enough land, you can build a stall and keep the horse yourself. Although this is cheaper than professional stabling (as you do the work rather than pay someone else), you will need not only the stall but also storage facilities for hay, bedding, saddle, tack and miscellaneous items. You will also need to purchase bedding and hay, which will run you $100 or more per month. You will also need to purchase minerals and salt, as well as paying for water and electricity (allow another $40 per month). Finally, the work which would have been done by the professional stable (e.g. mucking out stables) will likely take you a half-hour per day just for the basic activities.

- Vet Costs. Your horses should be inoculated once per year, de-wormed 3 times per year, and have a dental checkup annually. These basic items will cost $200 to $300 per year. Should the horse become ill, medical costs can range from $200 to $8000 (e.g. for a case of colic requiring corrective surgery).

- Farrier. Horse hooves need to be trimmed every 2 months (cost $30 each time) and if shoes are required these cost about $30 additional. Shoes are usually required if you ride your horse out on a regular basis, so allow $360 per year farrier costs.

- Insurance. Third party accident insurance is a legal requirement in some countries. In addition to the legal requirements, you may wish to insure against other items (e.g. death, theft, incapacitating illness). Basic insurance costs about $40 per month.

- Equipment. To ride your horse you will need saddle, rugs, tack, and your own riding clothes. These will run you about $2000 to purchase a basis set, plus one must allow for repair or replacement costs if one rides frequently.

- Miscellaneous. Horse sprays, fly sheets, cleaning solutions and so on can be expected to run a minimum of $200-$300 per year.

In total, one is looking at a minimum cost of $2000 (if self-stabling) or $4000 (professional stable) just for keeping the horse. If your horse becomes seriously ill, these costs can double. In addition to the actual costs of keeping the horse, there are costs for using it (e.g. training for you, training for the horse, show or competition costs).

Consequently, when buying a horse, one needs to think not only of the purchase price, but more importantly of the costs of keeping and caring for it over a period of years. If these costs are too high, it may be worthwhile looking at alternatives (e.g. sharing a horse between two or more owners).

In the care and keeping of horses, it is necessary to have a variety of standard horse supplies at the ready in order to responsibly fulfill our duties as horse owners or caregivers.

While fundamental needs such as quality food, adequate water, and comfortable shelter are obvious, there are additional supplies that are absolutely essential to the health and functionality of the horse in question and they are classified by the physical care for the horse and utilization of the horse’s abilities.

Included in physical care are those horse supplies that feature the materials used for grooming the animal. Frequent horse grooming is imperative for the comfort and appearance of the horse.

The supplies most often used in grooming include a curry comb – used to loosen dirt in the horse’s coat, a dandy brush which removes the dirt, a body brush which grooms the coat, a mane comb which does the same for the horse’s mane, a hoof pick/brush which cleans the hoofs, and a polishing towel used to give the horse a healthy sheen at the end of brushing.

As important as grooming in the physical care for a horse is medical care. Just as we keep a first aid kit in our homes should anyone require assistance, we must also keep a horse first aid kit as a part of your standard horse supplies.

Of course, in the event of illness or injury it is imperative that a veterinarian be called immediately; but in the meantime, a first aid kit can help you keep your horse comfortable – and out of immediate danger – until the doctor can arrive. Such items that should be included in first aid kit for horses include:

*antiseptics
*wound dressings
*bandages
*splints
*tweezers
*thermometer

There are, of course, those horse supplies that are associated with the utilization of the horse. For example, in order to ride your horse, you must have a variety of horse supplies on hand for riding.

The equipment used in this case is referred to as tack and includes:

Saddles – The “seat” in which the rider sits.
Stirrups – Which act as a support for the rider’s feet.
Bridles and Halters – Which slip over the horse’s head and are used to control the movement of the horse.
Reins – The ropes that run from the bit to the rider’s hands.
Bit – Which fits in the mouth of the horse.

Ultimately, there is a variety of equipment that is used for different styles of riding, racing, or showing a horse. The type of supplies used differs in each particular situation.

Owning a horse requires a significant amount of responsibility. As owners, we are committed to the physical and emotional care for the animals that have been entrusted to us.

Proper medical attention, healthy nutrition and hydration, frequent and loving grooming, and a dedication to having proper horse supplies on hand at all times are all a part of taking comprehensive care of our horses.

Horse riding is an incredible joyful experience. Learning to ride gives you a sense of mystical pleasure as you are able to communicate and become one with the horse.

Lessons are not just for professionals or competitive riders, even the occasional rider can enjoy the benefits of a lesson. Riding lessons enable a person to develop their skill in communicating to the horse with aids.

Lessons can help you to correct any bad habits you have picked up over the years. Formal horse riding lessons give you the advantage of having some one who is trained in horsemanship, watch you and guide you.

Many times a rider can feel that their horse is not moving correctly, but may not be sure how to change it. An instructor has all the tips and expertise to get you and your horse moving in the correct direction.

When you start to ride it can be the beginning of a lifelong love. A single accident can change the entire experience and put a complete stop to your desire to ride. I remember when we had a horse and my neighbor came over to ride with me. My father an in-experienced horse person put both of us up together, bareback.

Well in no time at all we both fell off and my neighbor refused to ever get back on a horse. If you have any doubts, concerns, fears or apprehension when you are first starting to ride, you will be able to work through these and overcome them in a controlled environment of a formal riding lesson.

Now I am not saying that you will never fall off when you are taking a riding lesson. I think that I fell off more in lessons than any other time in my riding adventures. However the horses that are used in riding lessons are accustomed to beginner riders.

When you are first starting to ride you can tend to bounce like a ball on and off of the saddle, so falling off is quiet natural. If you get on a horse for the first time in an open field and lose your balance, a horse can respond in various ways.

The horse is a good judge of character; the horse will know who is really in charge. He may very well take a hold of the reins, get a swing in his step and encourage you to bounce off. You land on the ground and the horse is charging across the field.

When you fall off whilst having a riding lesson, there are usually staff to pick you back up onto your feet and others to track down your horse. Not much time is wasted and you are once again learning the essentials skills to deepen your seat and relax.

Another reason to take formal riding lessons is so that you do not teach your horse bad habits. A horse that is not taught correctly is harder to sell than a horse that knows and responds well to horse riders aids.

Horses back riding lessons are hard work, they can be tough, but man they are rewarding when you get it right. If you cannot afford to have a lesson on a regular basis like once or twice a week, that’s okay. I do strongly recommend treating yourself to a riding lesson at least a couple times a year, if you get hooked, don’t blame me.

Riders are always searching for that edge to make them better. They try new instructors or new techniques with their horse, new gear, but many never stop to think about how they can improve their own body with a targeted horse riding fitness program you will train your muscles in a way that is specific for a rider. In taking such a course, any rider, beginner or experienced, will see improvements. You see, a rider is a unique athlete and needs to have particularly strong core muscles and most important flexible lower back joints. The understanding of the function of the riding muscles provides a rider with knowledge to improve. Once the rider is familiar with these muscles they need a simple specific routine to follow.

There is a great program, Applied Posture Riding, which is specific for riders. It is a very unique program designed for riders only. It has been created by a lady with a Masters degree in Physiotherapy, she is a Pilates instructor and has achieved great success as a rider. His simple Pilates based course will guide you through a complete set of exercises, teaching you HOW TO train your riding muscles. The exercises begin on the floor teaching you how to find, test and train your deep core abdominal muscles.
This horse riding fitness routine will strengthen your core muscles and all the riding muscles by teaching you to ride on a big physio ball. It will help you recognize any problems you have with your body and then how to correct them. You will gain control of your posture, and increase your body awareness.

By following her program you will gain good core stability, the foundation of a good rider. Her horse riding fitness routine will progress through many simple steps finally teaching you HOW TO apply your new found body control in the saddle. You will notice your riding posture will change dramatically. Your riding will become pleasant and effective, you will move with your horse and not bounce or stiffen against him. The riding lessons; she has created one each for walking, trotting, the canter and jumping will complete the program. You will have that AAH Haa experience. That deep independent seat will happen. You will improve on every level all it takes is a little guided practice.

This program will save you attending Pilates classes or buying gym membership, back pain will be managed, just think of the time and money that you will be saving. She has put it all in one place for your convenience. This course will reinforce any riding lesson you have done. Riding instructors worldwide are recommending Pilates for horse riders. Riding instructors unfortunately don’t understand how to apply it though. This is why she created this incredible horse riding fitness program. She uses this program herself everyday for good stability and flexibility. This program applies exercises specific for riders and will give you great results, unlike any other program.

When you have had a bad fall, it can take a long time before you feel confident enough to get back on a horse. And so it should be, caution is the body’s way of protecting itself. But what do you do if you love horse and you love horse riding and you are yearning to get back in the saddle but your riding confidence is a rock-bottom low?

1. Maintain physical fitness, strength and suppleness
Start with what you have. Get fit. Lose any surplus weight that may have accumulated while you were laid up. Slowly build up your strength again and gradually regain your suppleness with stretches and yoga. If it was a severe injury, work with a professional, like a physiotherapist. You will automatically feel more confident when you are strong and fit

2. Eat a healthy diet. After an injury, you need to rebuild your physical strength. Eat enough, but not too much. Make sure you ingest all the vitamins you body needs while it is under all this physical and mental stress.

3. Limit alcohol, avoid drugs. Most horse riders know to avoid alcohol (and drugs, for the same reasons) if they plan to go anywhere near their horses. Be careful not to self-medicate with alcohol while you are feeling low and bored, it will not make you feel happier or better. You are only delaying the healing process; a very unwise approach indeed

4. Get enough sleep. When you sleep, your body takes time out to heal itself, physically and mentally. At no other time does your body need to recharge its batteries as desperately as after an injury. Invest in eight hours of deep, rejuvenating sleep a night, until you are fully restored.

5. Increase your body awareness. If you were injured physically, you probably have no difficulty paying attention to your body’s messages – especially the parts that were injured. Even if you did not sustain a serious injury, pay attention to what is going on inside you and in the immediate area around you. Rediscover your sense of touch and physical orientation. Body awareness is an essential attribute of all good riders.

6. Review your commitment to observe standard safety procedures. Always wear appropriate riding apparel, always check your equipment, always wear a helmet

7. Learn how to fall. Martial arts students spend a lot of time learning how to fall without injuring themselves. If you haven’t mastered this useful art yet, take some time to do so now. You will be investing in your future.

8. Get your timing right. Next time you ride, take all the variables into account. Don’t go riding if you are rushed, or feel under the weather, or have too many other things on your mind. Give your horse not only your time, but also your full attention.

9. Take the environment into account (as well as your horse’s reaction to the environment). Do not put either yourself or your horse at risk because you are desperate to go riding. Life’s too short.

10. Buy insurance, personal, horse and third party.
Make sure you are fully insured, and so is your horse. Last thing you need when you are recuperating from the physical and mental effects of a horse riding injury is to worry about doctor’s and/or vet’s bills.

So you see, there is a lot you can do to restore your confidence long before you gat back into the saddle. And doing something physical is good for your body and your mind. Once you are strong enough to start exercising again, remember exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural analgesic. So get out there and start mucking out those stables. It will cheer you up no end and in no time. (Just joking!)

Due to the amount of time, money and energy that goes into running a prosperous equestrian operation, locating the ideal horse property is no small task. Luckily Arizona is a state that every horse lover can call home, offering resources to support any type of equine sport. However, before you and your horses can ride off into the sunset, you should figure out what type of equestrian real estate will suit your needs best. For example, the needs of a recreational trail rider will differ greatly from those of a competitive rodeo rider or a comprehensive training school. No matter what your objectives are, sufficient planning is a prerequisite for success.

Appropriate Arizona Equestrian Properties Found with Prudent Planning

Despite the great assortment of Arizona equestrian real estate for sale, not too often will home buyers stumble on a horse property that meets every need. The individual quality of owning horses suggests that most property buyers ought to expect to make at least minor renovations, on their new Arizona horse-friendly real estate. Have a distinct idea of not just what type of house you dream of, but how you visualize your finished property when you’ve added or altered your riding arenas, fencing, stables or barns. Since equestrians spend a lot of time outside or in stables and barns, keep these areas in mind when locating equestrian real estate. Contemplate both your finances and the amount of effort that is needed.

When you are ready to build or renovate a barn on your Arizona property, design carefully and go forward responsibly. Ensure that your horses are guarded from the arid desert heat and dusty winds by choosing building materials that reflect heat and render plenty of ventilation. If you are building outdoor arenas or riding rings on your new Arizona horse property, take advantage of any shady areas on your land. Water and electrical systems should be able to supply more than you think you will need. If you are new to Arizona, it is strongly suggested that you talk with neighboring homeowners, tack shops and veterinarians to gain a comprehensive understanding of what horses in your area might need to thrive.

While access to the open range is a wonderful advantage to buying some Arizona equestrian homes, every horse owner knows the importance of keeping your horses secure when they are enjoying the great outdoors unattended. It is important to have fenced paddocks to accommodate your horses. It is recommended that horse owners refrain from installing barbed wire fences, which are not appropriate for such active and intelligent animals. Simply install fencing that will go along with your horse property’s overall appearance and purpose, and carefully contemplate your other outdoor facilities.

The Essence of the Old West Lives on in Arizona Equestrian Real Estate

With superb natural beauty and 300 sunny days annually, faultless riding conditions can be found almost any time, anywhere. The cities of Phoenix and Tucson as well as smaller communities on the outskirts such as Queen Creek equestrian properties feature a wide variety of equestrian homes. While the northern area of Arizona features mountain view homes in Prescott, Flagstaff and Sedona. Arizona horse-friendly real estate communities are found in every area of the state, which means you’ll always have access to horse facilities and services such as tack and feed shops, vets and boarding stables.

Have a look at Chandler equestrian real estate in the metro Phoenix area.
